What a good cleaning SOP covers

  • The order rooms and surfaces are cleaned, top to bottom and clean to dirty
  • Which chemical is used where, and the PPE for each
  • Restroom and high-touch surface disinfection
  • How the crew reports damage or supplies that are low

Example SOP

Commercial Office Cleaning SOP

Purpose
Clean client offices to the same standard every visit, using the right chemicals safely.
Scope
Applies to all cleaning staff assigned to office accounts.
Responsibilities
Cleaning technician · Site supervisor
Equipment & PPE
Color-coded microfiber cloths · Neutral cleaner, glass cleaner and disinfectant · Vacuum and mop with bucket · Nitrile gloves · Trash liners and restroom supplies

Procedure

  1. 1

Sign in and check the site notes

Sign in on arrival and read any client notes or special requests for this visit.

  2. 2

    Empty trash and recycling

Empty every bin into the cart and replace liners.

Caution: Do not compress trash with your hands; watch for sharp objects.

  3. 3

    Dust from top to bottom

Dust high surfaces first, then desks and counters, so dust falls onto areas not yet cleaned.

  4. 4

    Disinfect high-touch surfaces

Apply disinfectant to door handles, light switches and shared equipment and leave it for the label contact time.

Caution: Wear gloves and never mix chemicals.

  5. 5

    Clean the restrooms

Clean sinks, mirrors, toilets and urinals with the restroom-only cloths, then restock paper and soap.

  6. 6

    Vacuum and mop floors

Vacuum carpets, then mop hard floors from the far corner toward the door.

Caution: Place wet-floor signs on mopped areas.

  7. 7

    Final check and sign out

Walk the site against the checklist, lock up as instructed and sign out.

Notes

  • Use separate cloth colors for restrooms and other areas to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Report damage, leaks or low supplies to the supervisor the same day.
